Communication Intermediaries are Speech-Language Pathologists with additional training from Communication Disabilities Access Canada (CDAC) to support people communicating in police, legal and justice situations.

Who would benefit from a Communication Intermediary?

A Communication Intermediary may be required if a victim, witness or accused person has a disability, that makes it difficult for them to:

speak
understand, process or remember what is being said
express their opinions and thoughts in a clear manner
respond appropriately or consistently to questions
attend to, focus or retain what is being asked

How can a Communication Intermediary help?

Explain how a person communicates
Clarify a person’s level of understanding
Assist the person to understand questions
Assist the person to communicate their answers

Who pays for a Communication Intermediary?

Just like other accessibility accommodations, the service provider (e.g. police, lawyers, courts, victim services, health care facility) is responsible for payment of communication intermediary services.
